Swisscom started testing 50G PON technology
Telecommunications provider Swisscom has started testing its 50G PON technology on a live network in a Swiss municipality. In 2020, the company carried out laboratory tests of the technology. As I said – for the first time in the world.
In addition to reaching speeds of up to 50 Gb/s, this technology has other functions. For example, it significantly reduces latency compared to current standards, and guaranteed data rates and service levels can be achieved through so-called network segmentation.
Swisscom claims that these are not all the features of 50G PON that it intends to consider when launching new products and services to meet the requirements of business customers. The new technology is expected to be implemented by the provider in its networks by 2025.
